Why is Proper Denture Care Important?

Dentures help patients who have lost teeth regain confidence in their smiles and chew food more easily. However, improper care can lead to rapid deterioration or oral health issues such as gum inflammation or unpleasant breath.

Proper Cleaning Methods for Dentures

Cleaning dentures is essential to prevent bacteria buildup and plaque formation. Patients should follow these steps:

- Rinse dentures with clean water after every meal.

- Use a soft-bristled brush with denture cleaner instead of toothpaste, which may be too abrasive.

- Soak dentures in water or a denture solution overnight to prevent them from drying out and becoming brittle.

Storing Dentures When Not in Use

Proper storage of dentures when not in use helps prevent damage and reduces bacterial accumulation.

- Avoid placing dentures in dry or excessively hot conditions, as this can damage the material.

- Use a closed container with denture solution to soak them and prevent contamination or accidental drops.

Precautions When Using Dentures

Although dentures are a great solution, improper use can lead to problems. Patients should be cautious of the following:

- Avoid biting hard objects such as bones or hard seeds.

- Regularly check for any discomfort or irritation in the mouth. If any abnormal symptoms arise, visit a dentist immediately.

- Do not use denture adhesive on your own if dentures become loose. Instead, consult a dentist for adjustments.

The other day, I had a patient who came in for a consultation about his dentures, which had fallen out while he was eating crispy pork. He shared that he was mid-bite when suddenly his dentures landed on his plate. I couldn't help but smile at the story, but I explained that loose dentures often result from prolonged use without professional check-ups. I helped adjust them for him and advised that if his dentures ever feel loose again, he should visit me right away—before they fall out at another meal!
